5.15.08 Reflection

First we separated into different groups: balcony, american flag, add to the existing garden, and school beautification. I joined the American Flag group. We first walked over to the NCC to find a location and size for the garden. The middle wouldn't be a good spot because of the high traffic of kids running through it on a daily basis. The balcony garden was a good idea but we still didn't have permission to look at it so we came up with the conclusion to put it at the corner of Arch and Independence Mall East. This was a good location because there was already a garden next to this and people rarely ran through this area messing things up. My goal from now until are next meet is to rsearch prices on perennial plants and dry dirt. To whom ever don't already know perennial plants have a life cycle of 3+ years, as opposed to annual plants which have a life cycle of 1 year and biennials which have a life cycle of 2 years. This life cycle stuff may not mean much to some but this could save alot of money because if a plant keeps growing back every year on its own than we wouldn't have to find money to plant new ones.

{Grade This Essay] Motif: loneliness and companionship

Loneliness and companionship are the most important motif's in the story. Candy, Curly's wife, and crooks are examples of who these motif's were occasional occurences.
Candy is one of the people in this book that seemed to have it all together at the beginning of the book. His life took a turn for the worst every since his work brothers suggested killing his dog. The dog was the only thing candy could relate to that accepted him for who he was and never criticized him.
Curley's wife wasn't a whore or anything of the same as the book preceived her to be. She was just a person that looked for companionship after her husband destroyed her dreams of being a actress and emotionally abandoned her. She looked for companionship from the people who were the closest to her which was the workers. It turns out that lennie and curley's wife needed someone to listen to them which made them connect so well at first.
Crooks was the person who was ridiculed when the boss was angry only because he was black and had a crook in his back. Crooks was definitely lonely being one of the only black people around. Crooks could have connected with lennie because they both have disabilities making them an oddballs to society as they know it. Crooks have the crook in his back and he's black and lennie has that mental problem. Crooks who was fed up with being mocked took his shot at being an aggresser and mocked lennie because he was mentally slow.
Throughout the story there were a few lonely people who if they had a companion would have maybe turned out different. The selfishness of some kept that from happenning and for others the lack of mental know how kept them from finding that person to at least converse with.

The Farm As A Symbol {Grade This Essay}

The debate over the number and type of symbols in Of Mice And Men can go on for days. But today I'm bringing the farm to the table. This is symbolic because it could represent peace, the promise land, success, heaven, or even 40 acres and a mule.
To begin this, the farm could represent peace because they can go there and be uninterrupted by society. Peace which is a state of harmony or the absence of hostility is something that Lennie and George could have been trying to pursue their whole friendship.
40 acres and a mule is an essential symbol for this story. 40 acres and a mule was something promised to the slaves back in the day that only a few saw. Even though some slaves saw this, for the rest it was just an Mirage in the distance. George was working and looking after Lennie their whole friendship and I think the farm in George's mind was a prize visible but not obtainable because of Lennie's numerous foolish acts that he couldn't mentally control.
Success is something the pair was after which could definitely be an important symbol. Success which is an accomplishment of a purpose is something that relates solely to the farm. The farm which was their final destination would have symbolized success.
To wave the flag, the story has a variety of different symbol which could be expressed through a essay like this. If you read the book you might agree with me that peace, the promise land, success, heaven, or 40 acres an a mule are the top picks for symbols.

5.1.08 Service Learning relfection

This day of service learning had to be one of the more successful ones because we actually got a chance to leave the school and look at one of the places we were thinking of putting the garden which was the National Constitution Center. With all the playing around people weren't able to focus and present ideas to be taken but Marcel presented the idea of putting either circle or square gardens in the little sections on top of the granite. Shawanda also presented me with an idea of putting flowers along the walkways. I was also told of a idea of maybe making a rooftop garden around the balcony. I came up with an idea of putting recycle bins around the school so people could recycle the paper they use instead of putting it in trash. I learned that service learning takes alot of preparation and time. For the oncoming weeks we need to get permission for our space and develope ideas for gardens. We also need to come up with more ways to make are school look better.

Human Predator
When you think of a person telling you a story of a human predator or the theory of human predator you think of a mass serial murderer but that's not what I wanna tell you about. I wanna inform you people about Crooks and cocky Curly using lennie to exhibit my idea and a little about the human predator in us all.
This story shows the human predator in people because everyone is out to come out on on top. This shows how strong people try to concuer the weak people. this is a theory that could be used throughout the food chain. Like if people didn't invent boats they wouldn't be able to get exotic foods and everyone would be eating whatever they could. If all animals were extinct people would probably start killing the weakest people they could find and start eating them just to get that meat taste.
Curley to get my point across lives by the phrase "eat or get ate". He feels that if he don't prey on the weak than he must be one of the weak so he tries to be viewed as a king or something of the same. Curley preys on the workers, his wife, and lennie. He preys on Crooks because he's black.
Crooks is also a person that can be described as a human predator. He as a black man with a crook in his back on the field is one of the people who is at the bottom of the food chain. He found a companion in lennie but since lennie was mentally unstable he took his kindness as a weakness. He preyed on lennie because he realized lennie was white but retarded. He was tired of boss tyler verbally abusing him so he finally found a person he could use as a rebound victim.
